Items found on KD 5296

As with many old passenger vehicles, small items are left behind as rubbish, or perhaps lost on board. In the case of a coach like KD 5296 where the side windows wind down, many items were tucked into the rubber draft proofing strip and subsequently fell down into the space between the outer and inner lining panels. For example, one item is a crayon written sign with a street name and although it may have seemed a good idea to tuck into the window seal to indicate where the coach was picking up or dropping down, one can imagine that it soon sank from view to join the other items lost for decades. KD 5296 has proved to be a veritable time capsule of hidden gems - and not all the coach has been investigated yet.

The first "treasure item" to be found was indeed just that - a Silver Victoria 3d, dated 1896. It was stuck in paint in the battery locker and at first I thought it was a washer. It must have dropped out of somebody's pocket when the coach was repainted, presumably just after the war. It has been "given back" to the coach in a hidden location.
